Some people are fans of the Seattle Seahawks. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Seattle Seahawks. This 2013 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read all the 2013 NFL previews so far right here. Your team: Seattle Seahawks Your 2012 record: 11-5 Your coach: Pete Carroll. Anyone predicting that the Seahawks will win the Super Bowl this year (or even make it, frankly) is willfully turning a blind eye to the fact that this man is in charge of things. Remember a few years back when the Chargers were "the most talented team in the AFC" and people like Peter King would pick them to go to the Super Bowl even though that meant conveniently forgetting that fucking NORV was the coach? This is that. Somewhere down the line, Pete Carroll will …
data-mm-id=”_dfxcf5tsq”>In a game that most thought would be a slam dunk win, the Saints were outplayed, outclassed and, most importantly, vastly out coached. Due to several ill-advised, late-game decisions by Sean Payton, the Saints are going home after the first weekend of the playoffs. The first head-scratching decision came when Payton elected to not use the Saints' remaining timeout before the two-minute warning. New Orleans got the ball back with less than two minutes to go. Had the Saints called the timeout earlier, they would have had roughly two minutes and 30 seconds. While this choice could be justified, the rest of Payton's decisions can't. For some reason, Payton decided to play for the tie on the Saints' final possession of the game, down 20-17. The pla…
data-mm-id=”_u8dgoo0sw”>Cam Newton remains unsigned after he was officially released by the Carolina Panthers last week. There are any multitude of reasons for this — his questionable health in tandem with teams unable to travel to check his medicals being chief among them — but the fact of the matter is that teams around the league share the view that Newton is a risky investment right now. Newton's release was untimely in that it came after most of the potential starting quarterback positions around the league were filled. But the Los Angeles Chargers seem a clear match, given they haven't done anything to offset the loss of Philip Rivers and plan to open a new stadium next year. Anthony Lynn is reportedly a big Tyrod Taylor guy and wants to give him a shot at the startin…
data-mm-id=”_k7jl6r5r3″>The NFL team in Washington announced this morning that it would be changing its longtime racist name. The news was made official in a brief announcement on the team's official @Redskins Twitter account. The word that they will not be using anymore appeared seven times in the release saying they weren't going to use it anymore. That includes the name and logo still appearing at the top of the press release. pic.twitter.com/wFvTxdUP9s— Washington Redskins (@Redskins) July 13, 2020The team also plays at Redskins Park on Redskins Park Drive. You can find more information on Redskins.com. Suffice to say, there's a lot to be done with the new branding decisions. And who will be heading this project? Daniel Snyder and head coach Ron Rivera. I don'…
data-mm-id=”_keq08vg2x”>Tommy Heinsohn, basketball Hall of Famer, passed away today at the age of 86. Some of you reading this might remember Heinsohn from his days as a member of the Boston Celtics, both as a player and a coach. But the younger crowd, in which I am included, will remember Heinsohn for his 40-plus years spent broadcasting Celtics games. Heinsohn and longtime play-by-play partner Mike Gorman were a perfect pairing, a true fire-and-ice tandem. For every one of Heinsohn's over-the-top rants about referees, Gorman was there to bring him back to Earth. Heinsohn would bring the grumbling and complaining that all fans engage in during games, and Gorman brought the light-hearted optimism that served as a perfect counterweight on a television broadcast. I will remember Tom…
data-mm-id=”_w52daksx2″>Monday night was supposed to serve as one final referendum on the NBA MVP race with the Philadelphia 76ers stopping off in Denver to take on the Nuggets. We were supposed to get Joel Embiid v. Nikola Jokic and learn all sorts about both players in the process. The MVP is a season-long award but people have short memories and whoever played better Monday night would could have ended up the winner. Embiid, for his part, seemed to recognize that and decided to speak his mind to Shams Charania in an interview that dropped on Monday morning. Embiid insisted he did not care about winning MVP before complaining about why he hasn't won it before and took a handful of thinly-veiled shots at Jokic. Here are a few highlights: Joel Embiid:“I’m not a two-time MVP. I…
