Manchester City bid for Matheus Nunes as Bernardo Silva signs new contract

Manchester City have submitted a bid in excess of €50m (£42.7m) for Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes on an eventful day at the club. Bernardo Silva has committed his future and signed a new contract with the club until 2026, while Aymeric Laporte has announced that his time at the Etihad Stadium has come to an end.

Personal terms have been agreed with Nunes, who turns 25 on Sunday and is a Portugal teammate of Silva’s, with the proposed fee taking in a package of add-ons. Nunes signed for Wolves just over 12 months ago from Sporting for £38m.

Silva was linked with a summer switch away from City but has ended speculation over his future for now by signing a new deal after his previous terms were due to expire in…

Ford drivers vie for 2024 breakout win at Dover

Ford Motorsports came tantalizingly close to winning its first NASCAR Cup Series race of the season last weekend at Talladega, but neither Michael McDowell nor Brad Keselowski could make it happen at the end. The two blue oval drivers will look to break the drought Sunday afternoon when they compete in the Wurth 400 at Dover Motor Speedway in Dover, Del., the 11th race on the 2024 schedule. And what a 2024 it's been so far for Ford Motorsports, huh? While the most casual glance at the win column reveals a bad start for the teams — 0-for-10 — taking the whole season into consideration is even worse. Ford failed to win in the season-opening exhibition race in California — The Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum — at the legendary Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as Denny Hamlin walk…

2022 NFL Draft: All eyes on New York

Will 2022 be the year that New York NFL football finally gives its metropolitan area something to watch on Sundays? Following double-digit victory seasons from the Jets in 2015 and the yacht club Giants in 2016, neither franchise has sniffed a .500 record since. At first glance, tri-state area residents waking up on a Sunday and even possessing mild confidence about ending the afternoon with a victory in recent years is naive. The best record that either team has recorded after their last winning seasons is the Jets’ 7-9 performance in 2019. These are two franchises with all of the eyeballs and no success, but maybe this week’s NFL Draft can change their fortunes. The Giants and Jets both have two picks not just in the first round, but within the first 10 picks of the draft. For two …

2020 Idiot of the Year: The void beckons with Novak Djokovic, Ron DeSantis, and Jason Whitlock's stupid hat

UPDATE: We have compiled all 50 items into one handy list, for your reading convenience. It is available here. Welcome to Deadspin’s IDIOT OF THE YEAR awards! Our expert team has worked tirelessly to bring you this annual list of the sports and sports-adjacent figures who most intensely made us wish we had been shaken as infants. Within these rankings you will find all manner of dunces, dumbfucks, douchebags, and doofs. Each of these archetypes exist under the tentpole of idiocy, but they are not quite the same thing. So, before we begin our show, let’s explore the phenomenon a bit. What is an idiot? Is there any point to nailing down an objective definition, or can one only know it when they see it, like pornography? Can it be achieved in one grand flourish, or is it the sum of …

The Nationals' 2016 Calendar Has Fenway Park On The Cover

This picture is clearly Fenway Park, right? It may be covered in a giant American flag, but the big-ass wall in left field is a pretty big hint. It apparently was not a big enough hint for the company in charge of printing the Washington Nationals’ 2016 calendar: So what the hell happened here? According to MLB, it was all the calendar maker’s fault (via Boston.com): “Our licensee used an incorrect photo in its 2016 Nationals calendar, a product that the Nationals were not involved in producing. We are working quickly to rectify the situation including recalling the calendars from retail.” If they are looking for a new image to put on the cover, might I suggest this one? Why Your Team Sucks 2013: Seattle Seahawks

Some people are fans of the Seattle Seahawks. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Seattle Seahawks. This 2013 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read all the 2013 NFL previews so far right here. Your team: Seattle Seahawks Your 2012 record: 11-5 Your coach: Pete Carroll. Anyone predicting that the Seahawks will win the Super Bowl this year (or even make it, frankly) is willfully turning a blind eye to the fact that this man is in charge of things. Remember a few years back when the Chargers were "the most talented team in the AFC" and people like Peter King would pick them to go to the Super Bowl even though that meant conveniently forgetting that fucking NORV was the coach? This is that. Somewhere down the line, Pete Carroll will …

Sean Payton Blew Vikings Game for the Saints

data-mm-id=”_dfxcf5tsq”>In a game that most thought would be a slam dunk win, the Saints were outplayed, outclassed and, most importantly, vastly out coached. Due to several ill-advised, late-game decisions by Sean Payton, the Saints are going home after the first weekend of the playoffs. The first head-scratching decision came when Payton elected to not use the Saints' remaining timeout before the two-minute warning. New Orleans got the ball back with less than two minutes to go. Had the Saints called the timeout earlier, they would have had roughly two minutes and 30 seconds. While this choice could be justified, the rest of Payton's decisions can't. For some reason, Payton decided to play for the tie on the Saints' final possession of the game, down 20-17. The pla…

Colin Cowherd: Cam Newton And Tyrod Taylor Are the Same Guy

data-mm-id=”_u8dgoo0sw”>Cam Newton remains unsigned after he was officially released by the Carolina Panthers last week. There are any multitude of reasons for this — his questionable health in tandem with teams unable to travel to check his medicals being chief among them — but the fact of the matter is that teams around the league share the view that Newton is a risky investment right now. Newton's release was untimely in that it came after most of the potential starting quarterback positions around the league were filled. But the Los Angeles Chargers seem a clear match, given they haven't done anything to offset the loss of Philip Rivers and plan to open a new stadium next year. Anthony Lynn is reportedly a big Tyrod Taylor guy and wants to give him a shot at the startin…

data-mm-id=”_k7jl6r5r3″>The NFL team in Washington announced this morning that it would be changing its longtime racist name. The news was made official in a brief announcement on the team's official @Redskins Twitter account. The word that they will not be using anymore appeared seven times in the release saying they weren't going to use it anymore. That includes the name and logo still appearing at the top of the press release. pic.twitter.com/wFvTxdUP9s— Washington Redskins (@Redskins) July 13, 2020The team also plays at Redskins Park on Redskins Park Drive. You can find more information on Redskins.com. Suffice to say, there's a lot to be done with the new branding decisions. And who will be heading this project? Daniel Snyder and head coach Ron Rivera.
